Enjoy co-sleeping without the risks

When thinking about organizing your baby’s sleeping routine, I am sure you would like be able to experience the benefits of co-sleeping, as it creates stronger bond or attachment between you and your baby, allow quicker access to the baby in the event of an emergency, such as stopped breathing, and also make breastfeeding easier during the night.

But you also have to be aware of the different risks putting your baby to sleep in your own bed involves.

Physical risks for the baby

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns parents not to place their infants to sleep in adult beds, stating that the practice puts babies at risk of suffocation and strangulation, and the American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) agrees.

According to data provided by the CPSC, more than 500 deaths were linked to toddlers under 2 years sleeping in adult beds, more than 75% of those involving infants younger than 3 months old.

121 of those deaths were caused by a parent, sibling or caregiver rolling on top of a baby while he/she was asleep.

But parents rolling over your baby are not the only risk, as there are also other less common but pervasive hazards: the baby can fall off the bed, he can fall between the wall and the headboard, and can suffocate in loose bedding.

CPSC also reported more than 100 infant deaths attributable to hidden hazards for babies on adult beds, including:

  • Suffocation when an infant gets trapped or wedged between a mattress and headboard, wall, or other object
  • Suffocation resulting from a baby being face-down on a water bed, a regular mattress, or on soft bedding such as pillows, blankets, or quilts
  • Strangulation in a bed frame that allows part of an infant’s body to pass through an area while trapping the baby’s head

Drawbacks for parents

Not only babies themselves may be exposed to unwanted consequences of sharing your own bed, but parents may also see their lives affected.

Sharing your bed with your baby may interfere with sex life and intimacy, and may also interfere with your sleep, as babies are especially active while they sleep.

Does this mean babies should necessarily sleep in a separate room?

Not at all.

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ position is that babies should sleep close to their parents but not in the same bed.

Also The Foundation for the Study of Infant Death (FSID), which funds much of the research into cot death, actually strongly recommends that your baby sleeps next to you, rather than with you.

To make this easy you can you can use a bedside crib; that way he can sleep under his own bedding, but within sight and sound of you.

This is a crib which can be adapted to fit snugly against your own bed with one side removed so that you are near your baby, but in separate beds.

Help my kids to solve their problems

Being a parent of a 7 years old only child, I find my boy has kept clinging on us to solve their problem. He always find us as a refuge for this issue and hence I have concern that they may not have the necessary skills eventually to face up the issues of the adult world. Perhaps, I’m overly concern.

Nevertheless, in the effort to address the issue, I went around asking friends and relatives for suggestions and also search the internet for some kind of advise. Moving along, I realize that this is just part and puzzle of the learning process for the kid. I have found a post that discusses about developing Problem Solving skills in the kids. A big part of this development lies with us as parents like getting them to think aloud, avoid telling them what to do, discipline ourselves not to go to their rescue immediately and help them set priority. I’m thinking through these now and would work on putting some of these in place.

So, join me to train our next generation.

Parenting angry kids

I have a couple of kids and at time, they really make me blow my head off. Caring for them is my top priority, yet I have to learn to manage them and at time, their temper. Some time when they get very angry for whatever reason, they either scream and shout, throw their toys around or even kick our little pet dog! This really make me very furious. However instead of using discipline, I guess I have to find some mean to manage their anger.

Well, from the internet, I know that Kids grow and develop through different stages in their life. At each development stage of the child, there are different characteristic as well as behaviors. And from this very post in a website, I found some advise on how to manage the Kids’ anger. Different angles are examined and solution explored, particularly in seeking to understand why the kids do get angry. Some of these pointers are really useful and I guess I will attempt to put into practice. You too check it out.
