The most frequently cited reasons for ordering an early pregnancy scan will include the following:

1. An early pregnancy scan is used for dating – which is routine in most parts of developed world. This is the most accurate way of estimating the age of a pregnancy and when the woman can expect to deliver. This is termed the “Expected date of Delivery.”

2. To confirm that the pregnancy is ongoing. To monitor a pregnancy that already is suggesting problems, such as pain or bleeding. In such circumstances, one has to consider the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy.Ectopic pregnancy is very dangerous, and must be diagnosed at the earliest opportunity.

In cases where a proper technique of scanning, such as trans-vaginal scan, is used and there is no life demonstrated after 7 weeks of pregnancy, a miscarriage can be assumed. In a number of cases a repeat scan may be necessary.

3. To know whether this is twin or not, an early pregnancy scan is a must.
